Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

  • Is Bonnyrigg Pool Shop fully licenced?

Yes, our licence number is 387140C.

  • How do I work out how many litres my pool is?

    Try this easy calculation:

    • Circular pool (m) – Diameter x Diameter x Average Depth x 831 = Total volume in litres
    • Oval pool (m) – Length x Width x Average Depth x 831 = Total volume in litres
    • Rectangular pool (m) – Length x Width x Average Depth x 1000 = Total volume in litres
  • How do I fix a green pool?

Most importantly, don't empty the pool. Brush down all the walls into the pool and super chlorinate the pool with liquid or granular chlorine then run the filter for at least 6 hours. If your pool water becomes cloudy and does not clear with normal filtration you may need to add a floccing agent to send all the suspended dead algae in the water to the bottom of the pool. You then need to vacuum out to waste. Bring in a pool water sample for a free water test.

  • Can you clean my pool?

Yes, we have regular weekly, fortnightly and monthly programmed cleans. If it's just a one-off for a special occasion, we can do that too.

  • How do I backwash my sand filter?

Firstly find out what type of filter it is or take a photo and send it to us. We can then explain the best way to do it. We can also show you on our filter display in the shop.

  • How do I clean my cartridge filter?

Turn the filtration system off, remove the lid and remove the cartridge. Use the hose to wash down the cartridge. We have a special attachment for the hose to make this job easier.

  • How do I clean a DE filter?

You firstly need to backwash, rinse for 5 seconds then backwash again. Repeat this a few times. For more info just give us a call.

  • How does a pool pump work?

Pool pumps work by sucking water from the skimmer box, pumping the water through the filter, then back to the pool.

  • How do I look after my pool?

We recommend bringing in a pool water sample for free testing at least every 2 weeks in the hotter months and once a month through the colder seasons when the pool is not in use. We can then teach you how to maintain your pool and keep on top of things all year round.

  • Why should I look after my pool during winter?

Being pro-active is the best way. It is cheaper to Winterise your pool and put it into winter mode. Just ask us how.

  • How do I remove black spot from the pool?

Depending on the surface of the pool and the type of black spot algae will depend on how to treat it. Call in with a photo so we can offer you the best treatment and products to address the problem.

  • Why isn't my cleaner working?

It could be one or more of many reasons. Blocked baskets, filter needs cleaning, cleaner blocked, holes in hose, vacuum plate not fitted properly. Call in so we can help you diagnose the problem.

  • My pool is leaking, what do I do?

Place a bucket of water on the top step of the pool and mark the level of pool water on the outside of the bucket. After leaving the pump on for 24 hours, check the level of water against the mark on the bucket. Do the same with the pump turned off for 24 hours. Determine if the water level went down more with the pump on or the pump off. Call us with the results and we'll help you with the next steps.

  • What is the best way to put chemicals in the pool?

Safety first. Put some pool water in a bucket, then add the chemicals to the bucket of water and pour it around the pool.

  • Can I put the pool chemicals in at the same time?

Never mix chemicals. Please call us for more information if you are not sure.

  • Can I get a heater for my pool?

Yes, heating your pool is the best way to extend your swimming season. Ask us for a quote on some great energy and efficient options.

  • How do I remove calcium build up from the chlorination cell?

Calcium levels higher than the recommended level will result in a less efficient cell and ultimately a shorter cell life. To remove the build up you can purchase a salt cell cleaner. To limit the build up of calcium scale on the cell, you can purchase a pre-mixed Salt Cell Protector to go in the pool water which lasts for 6 months.  This softens any deposits, making it so much easier to remove.

A self-cleaning salt water chlorinator reverses the build-up process through reverse polarity and blows the calcium off.

  • Can I buy replacement parts for my swimming pool cleaner?

This all depends on who you purchased it from and the brand. Always check parts are available before buying, or it may just cost you more in the long run. At Bonnyrigg Pool Shop we only sell pool cleaners that have parts readily available and excellent warranty.

  • When do I need to replace the sand in my sand filter?

Depending on how the filter has been looked after, manufacturers recommend every 5-7 years. Ask us how to treat the sand first.
